Week One

Our journey will begin with a ferry ride across the Caribbean to magical Isla Mujeres (Island of women) where we will be staying for 4 nights in a beach front boutique hotel on one of THE most beautiful beaches (white sand & turquoise waters). North Beach in Isla Mujeres was voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world. The entire island is only 5 miles long with no cars; only taxis, mopeds, bicycles and golf carts!  There we will rent golf carts and explore the island ~ ancient ruins, churches, graveyards, a turtle sanctuary, women's beading coop, markets and a tortillaria - if you've never tasted a real freshly made warm tortilla - well - "yum" is all I can say.

Next we will travel to Playa del Carmen - a small beach town in the Yucatan Penninsula with fantastic beaches, 5th Avenue shopping, and amazing restaurants.  From there we will take excursions to the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza (one of the 7 wonders of the world), swim in a cenote, watch a traditional Mayan dance, and participate in an sacred Mayan cleansing ritual.

Week Two

We will begin (or continue) in Playa Del Carmen for 3 nights in our boutique hotel located near the famous 5th Avenue and just 2 blocks from the beach.  Spend the day shopping along the famous 5th Avenue or at one of the gorgeous beaches. In the evening, stroll along the avenue for al fresco dining while listening to live music from local musicians.   From here we will be taking an excurision via a local collectivo to explore the ancient ruins of Tulum that overlook the beautiful Caribbean. After exploring the ruins, we will swim in the turquoise colored waters where women have bathed for thousands of years. A truely breathtaking experience.

Next, we will travel by bus & ferry to the remote Isla Holbox where we will stay for for 4 nights at a lovely boutique beachfront hotel. Isla Holbox is one of the few places left that are unspoiled by resorts and shopping malls. What you will find instead are  beautiful beaches, wildlife, sandy streets, local restaurants and small markets & shops.  Located between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf fo Mexico, the island is with waters rich in marine life.  The island is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve and separated from the mainland by the Yalahau Lagoon, which is home to flamingos and pelicans.

Here we will take a 3 island tour to Isla Pajaros (Bird Island) which is the nesting site for more than 140 species of birds.  From Isla Pajaros we will head to Yalahau, or ''eye of water,'' a freshwater pool with a natural gurgling spring. This spot was used as a watering hole by pirates. Now we will swim in the refreshing waters which, as the locals say, will make you ten years younger.   Last stop is Passion Island, a tiny little deserted beach full of bright pink seashells. From the observation tower, you get a great view of the lagoon and Holbox.  I'm ready - let's go!!!

Meet Your Host ~ Michelle Premura

"I am  super EXCITED to be offering this retreat once again in 2017! Our April 2016 retreat was such an amazing experience ~ can't wait to share my passions with you!

Michelle is a co-creator of Turquoise Barn.  She is a certified vegan living & raw food chef & instructor, reiki practioner, herbalist apprentice, artist, jeweler, mother, wild food enthusiast and botanical cuisine aficionado.  Michelle graduated from the University of Colorado-Boulder in Fine Arts - Sculpture.   She also graduated as a gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, CA and studied jewelry design & manufacturing at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Michelle has been learning and practicing whole food and natural living for over 25 years since she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1985. In addition to hosting workshops and retreats at Turquoise Barn, she has also lectured and taught at a variety of schools and universities, as well as private events.

Her love of travel has lead to taking her retreats on the road and in the sky.  Michelle has been traveling in Mexico since 1992, including a 1 year solo backpacking trip throughout Mexico and Central America.

Do I need a passport?  Yes.  Allow at least 6-8 weeks from time of application to receive.

Is it safe to travel in Mexico?  I know some people are concerned with safety when considering travel in Mexico.
Mexico is a HUGE country, and just like anywhere else including the U.S., there are certain areas that are more dangerous than others (currently in Mexico these are mostly the border towns and the western part of the country - the opposite side of where we will be).  Please be assured that we will not be near any of these locations. We are only traveling to very SAFE areas geared mainly for tourists. As with anywhere you travel, you just need to use common sense and take standard precautions, i.e. be aware of your surroundings, don't flash valuables around, and don't leave your wallet on the beach (seriously, people do that).

I have been making numerous trips to Mexico since 1992; including extensive traveling throughout Mexico and Central America for almost 1 year solo as a single woman and I never felt threatened.  More recently, in January 2016 I met my cousin and we traveled together visiting numerous locations.  Also, in April 2016, I traveled solo for 1 week before I met my group for our amazing retreat.  And in 2014, I traveled with my teenage son, a female friend and her teen son.  We traveled to 3 different places by local bus and never felt afraid or uncomfortable. This is the same area that we will be going with our group.  This area is very family oriented and SAFE.

Do I need to share a room if I'm traveling solo? For an additional fee, we offer a single supplement for those more comfortable having a private room.  For shared rooms, we will match you up with someone of the same sex with 2 beds in the room.

Do I have to eat vegetarian or vegan? The food in our house will consist of fruits, juices, vegetables and other whole food plant-based snacks.  For meals out we will guide you and recommend healthy plant-based meals, however, you are welcome to order whatever you would like from the menu.  There will ALWAYS be a healthy vegetarian/vegan option for all meals.

Is this a cleanse?  Technically, no.  However, cleansing of the mind, body, & spirit is almost ineveitable on this trip. Breakfast will always include fresh juices each morning and some may choose to continue juicing during the day or eating light.  This is OPTIONAL.  Walking, swimming, meditating, yoga, singing, laughing, crying - also optional but highly recommmened.

What should I bring?  When you reserve your space, we will send you a detailed information sheet of what to bring (and what not to bring) to ensure you are comfy and cozy and well prepared for the trip.
